Goodbye to Provincetown/Saved by the "To the Water....." Show

Each year right about now I go into a funk, the only word that seems right for what I feel after I leave Provincetown. When I first visited P-town eight summers ago, I knew I had gone somewhere special but I had no idea that over time I would grow to love a place the way I do the little village at the tip of Cape Cod and feel that it is my spiritual home. I hope everyone has a place like this. A place that stays with them constantly and makes them yearn for more, makes them feel the need to be connected all the time even if it will be another eleven months possibly before returning to the physical place, a place that brings peace and happiness, love and understanding, a place that clears the head and allows for thoughts that will lead to growth and development.

Knowing that I would feel the way I do right now is exactly why I curated the Summer show at Lounge Gallery in Lafayette, LA. "To the Water...." is a beautiful show featuring paintings and photography by fourteen artists. I selected the artists included because of their great ability to capture a sense of time and place in their work and, moreover, because I need to connect with pieces on that level allowing art to transport me to the place I want to be. My vision for the show was that when folks walked into the gallery they would feel that they had been removed from the hot, humid Louisiana summer and taken "To the Water......", wherever the water might be. Whether it is a sailboat in the bay, a boat tied up at a lake marina, a fishing boat in the Atchafalaya basin, a view of the marsh, a branch in the woods, or a vast ocean scene, the artists in this show have created paradise in pieces that are beautiful, meditative, and transporting.

The closing reception for the show is this Saturday night during 2nd Saturday Art Walk in Lafayette. Here are some of my favorite pieces from the show that are taking me "To the Water......." today.

If you are in Louisiana on Saturday, be at Lounge Gallery for the reception from 5:30-8 pm. If you would like to purchase a piece or need more information on any piece or artist, please let me know. For now, enjoy my selections:

My Kind of Beach Style....Part 2

As I began the process of writing this post, I received my daily e-blast from Design Sponge, one of the many blogs that I follow. Design Sponge's top post for that day was the Ohio home of Amy and Paul Hamilton. Even though the lovely home is in Ohio, the Hamilton's have "channeled a sort-of New England seaside town for the decoration of their in 1859 home."

As I perused the images and read the article, I realized that their home represents the other side, as opposed to all-white and blue cottage, of beach style that I love. In this version of my dream beach, things take-on an old barn-like vibe but with pops of white to keep it fresh and airy.

Even though this is Paul Hamilton's studio and not actual living space, I can imagine a space like this as the main room of the cottage. I love the old wood ceiling with exposed beams and the posts which serve as a subtle divider of space. I could see the living area in the center of the room, kitchen at one end, and work space at the opposite end.

I would love the furniture to feel a bit like Keith McNally's Martha's Vineyard getaway that was featured in Elle Decor ... a little bit of old wicker mixed with slipcovered sofa, an antique chandelier with paper shades above, an old and worn rug..perfect slightly bohemian and thrown together p-town vibe. Walls would need to be light so I would paint all walls in the main room my favorite Benjamin Moore barely-off white color, "Soft Chamois".

I would love to use Jed Johnson Home's "Poppy" fabric in blue on an old wicker chair:

and on a slipcovered sofa, pillows of "Nautilus-Blue/White Embroidered" by Jed Johnson Home:

Jed Johnson Home fabrics are available through Jeffery McCullough Art & Design Consulting, Louisiana to-the-trade rep for the fabric line.

Boston designer Gary McBournie always creates beach cottages that appeal to me. Here is the kitchen of one that would be perfect in barn-style beach chic:

and from the Hamilton house, I love the idea of a pergola covered dining area outside in lieu of a dedicated dining space inside:

Contrary to what some think, we do have to continue working on projects while in Provincetown so a work space is required. I love the idea of an old farm table as desk with art filled shelves above.

Here are some pieces I would love to see while I work:

Gwen Voorhies

For the bedroom, continuing the natural wood walls ala this room by Sarah Richardson that was featured on House of Turquoise blog would be great. I love the casual charm of this room. The styling is actually perfect for Provincetown weather. Some nights, an extra quilt is needed. Some nights, a fan is required.

I would want a white painted headboard and quilt, sheets, shams of varying John Robshaw patterns from the Provincetown location of John Derian (how lucky is Provincetown to have that shop??).

Above the bed would hang this fantastic Laurence Young painting:

and to replace the little too cute for me fish on the small side wall, this duo would be perfect:

Rick Casali

I am in love with this bathroom by Tracery Interiors for the 2012 Southern Living Magazine Idea House in Senoia, Georgia. Studio Printworks wallpaper,"Animal Farm-Blue Ribbon", and Thomas O'Brien Sconces from Circa Lighting is enough to really get me going. Throw in the rustic vintage mirror leaning in front of a window and you've really gone a little P-town in Georgia. Love this.

and what would I spend plenty of time doing if my fantasy were to come to true? Hours on a hammock strewn with pillows and a great blanket like the Hamilton's seems perfect and doing what it says in the journal below would be ideal!
