Dana Manly at City Club

The January/February/March group show opened on Thursday with brisk attendance and great sales. This group show is particularly special to City Club because it is a "Members Only" show featuring seven very talented artists who are active members of the club.

First up on the blog postings I will do on each artist...Dana Manly.

Dana Manly, New Orleans native, paints what she knows and inspires her: New Orleans, Venice and Santa Fe. You will see the Cabildo building and Jackson Square in the French Quarter of New Orleans in two of the below pieces (the Second Line-a New Orleans tradition) and the doorway piece is in Venice.

Dana's bio states:

"Intrigued by shadows and depth, Manly wants to create a sense that her paintings go on infinitely. Her rich and colorful paintings invite the viewer to look into spaces-spaces that reflect a mood, a hope for the future, or perhaps even lead one to deepening mystery."

Manly's paintings are detailed, detailed, detailed..quite strong upon first glance, the multi-layered (many are a combo of Venetian plaster and acrylic) pieces reveal even more each time you look at them..it is as if the paintings control how much you can take away from them and in what doses.

My favorite pieces of the ten paintings by Manly in the show are:
